Thor Movie Review
May 8, 2011 No CommentsYou have the standard hunky superhero. Chris Hemsworth certainly fits the bill. His impressive physique and striking good looks deserve a double take. Just check out his shirtless scenes.
Ok, so I digress. This movie has a simple yet endearing storyline. Arrogant prince, the god of thunder falls in love with a mortal and learns lessons in humility.
Thor, son of Odin, an arrogant warrior who loves a good fight starts as off the barbaric, though charismatic heir to the throne. That cocky swagger paired with the endearing smile makes him the bad boy of Asgard.
Still, he’s about to be crowned the ruler of Asgard when his dear brother, mischief making Loki intervenes.
Thor’s all brawn and charges right into the Jotuheim to teach the Frost Giants a lesson, thereby breaking a truce between Asgard and Jotuheim, sparking a war between the races. In a fight with his father, Odin, Thor is stripped of his power and cast down to earth. Odin then sends Thor’s magic hammer to the earth, with the declaration that “Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.”
That’s how the mighty Thor, now a mere human, meets his love interest Jane Foster (played by Natalie Portman), a bad driver with a perchant for knocking him down.
What follows is a lesson on humility.
Contrast his battle in Jotuheim against the Frost Giants to his vulnerability as a human on earth. You’d see how painfully the mighty Thor has fallen.
The special effects were just enough to make the epic battles realistic. Somehow, the Frost Giants remind me of Orcs and the battle in Jotuheim remind me of the spectacular battles in Lord of The Rings.
The culture in the realms of Asgard and Earth were well defined, contrasted through mannerisms, language. Hence Thor, in regular guy’s clothing while on earth, still seemed out of place.. from another world. Ok, smashing a cup to show appreciation for the drink certainly isn’t normal earth behaviour.
Loki, Thor’s cunning and evil brother is channeled convincingly by Tom Hiddleston. One never knows which side he’d take, thereby introducing the unexpected twists and turns which makes the story all the more interesting.
Anthony Hopkins as Odin made the key moments in the film memorable.
On thing lacking was the chemistry between Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth. Yes, Natalie Portman channeled the star-struck girl in love very well, but Chris Hemsworth’s Thor seemed too self absorbed to be really interested in Natalie’s Jane.
Other than that, my kids and I thoroughly enjoyed the movie.
Here’s a trailer from Thor, via YouTube. Enjoy!
